For a NAS you want CMR (not SMR) drives designed for always-on use and vibration tolerance. Buy from more than one batch to reduce simultaneous-failure risk, and always pair drives with a real backup. Capacity planning matters more than chasing the newest model. Work out how much you need today, double it for growth, and remember that redundancy costs capacity — a RAID-Z2 pool of six 8 TB drives gives you roughly 32 TB usable, not 48 TB. Fewer, larger drives use less power and leave room to expand, but very large drives take longer to resilver after a failure, which is why double parity (RAID-Z2) is the sweet spot for bigger arrays. Drive health is a long game: enable S.M.A.R.T. monitoring, run periodic scrubs, and act on rising error counts before a drive fails outright. Because all drives eventually die, the golden rule stands — RAID keeps you running through a failure, but only backups protect against deletion, ransomware, fire and theft.
