As a rough guide: 8 GB is enough for a light Docker-and-media setup, 16 GB is a comfortable starting point for most homelabs, and 32 GB or more makes sense once you run several virtual machines or a large ZFS pool (ZFS uses free RAM as its ARC read cache, roughly 1 GB per TB as a baseline). Check your motherboard or mini PC for the correct type (DDR4 vs DDR5), form factor (SODIMM for most mini PCs, DIMM for desktops/servers), and maximum capacity before buying. ECC (error-correcting) memory detects and fixes single-bit errors and is recommended for serious TrueNAS/ZFS builds where silent corruption must be caught — but it requires a CPU and board that support it. Plenty of reliable home servers run non-ECC RAM with good backups; ECC is a belt-and-braces upgrade, not a hard requirement.
