Cómo reducir el consumo de tu servidor doméstico
Consejos prácticos para bajar el consumo eléctrico de tu servidor sin sacrificar fiabilidad ni rendimiento.
A home server runs 24/7, so small savings in power add up over a year. Here's how to keep your electricity bill low.
Measure first
You can't optimise what you don't measure. A cheap smart plug with energy monitoring tells you exactly what your server draws. Then estimate the yearly cost with our power consumption calculator.
Choose efficient hardware
- Modern low-power CPUs (Intel N-series) idle at 6–10 W.
- SSDs use far less power than spinning disks — great for the OS and apps.
- Right-size your build: a mini PC beats a power-hungry old tower for most tasks.
Tune the software
- Enable CPU power-saving governors and C-states in the BIOS.
- Spin down idle hard drives where safe.
- Consolidate workloads with containers so you run one efficient machine, not several.
Consider scheduling
If you don't need 24/7 availability, wake-on-LAN plus scheduled shutdowns can cut runtime dramatically. Backups and heavy jobs can run during off-peak electricity hours.
Do the math
A server drawing 12 W continuously uses about 105 kWh per year. At $0.30/kWh that's roughly $31 a year — cheaper than a single month of many cloud subscriptions.
12 W × 24 h × 365 days ÷ 1000 = 105 kWh/year
105 kWh × $0.30 = $31.50/yearThe takeaway
Efficient hardware plus a little BIOS tuning keeps most home servers under a few dollars a month. Measure, right-size, and you'll barely notice it on your bill.
